A reprise of a problem discussed here in September 2009 but - as far as I
can see - without any satisfactory conclusion ...
Running z/VM 5.4 in a virtual machine. Objective is to use the virtual
machine's unit-record devices (RDR 000C, PUN 000D, PRT 000E) as, 'real'

Hello all,
have a bit of a problem here..
Doing a POC for a customer who wants to run a SysPlex under z/VM (5.4).
Two members in the Plex both at z/OS 1.10 JES2 (same RSU).
As per RMF, I am not seeing any bottlenecks in XCF or CPU usage, z/VM is not
complaining either, no appreciable paging
I should have added this information in the first mail:
MASDEF:
MASDEF SHARED=CHECK, /* MULTI ACCESS SPOOL CHECK
RESTART=YES,CKPTLOCK=ACTION, /*
DORMANCY=(100,500), /*
Alan,
I think so but I'm not quite sure. We use the NETSTAT OBEY sometimes,
usually for stop or start of a link. For instance NETSTAT OBEY START DEVHW1.
Regards, Berry.

Andre,
You may want to consider changing the value for the HOLD to a lower number, say
10 or so. You can use the $T MASDEF command to do this while you are running.
Issue the command to all members of the MAS.

Hi Berry, I'm out of ideas without looking at data. You
may want to open a PMR.

Hello,
We have zLinux(Redhat V5.5) running under z/VM V6.1 on z196.
zLinux is coupled to VSWITCH which is defined IP and has two separate OSA

and two OSA adapter are connected same CISCO L2 switch.
We tested VSWITCH failover, and it worked well.

All,
Can any give me the FTP command to transfer to the Reader instead of

As usual, the solution is simple and (with hindsight) obvious ...
z/VM now only supports 3203 printers
Change directory to
SPOOL 000E 3203 A
and it all works just as one would expect.
Thanks to Tom Paul for his (off-list) discussion of the problem - he helped
me to, 'emiminate the impossible'
Sir Jeff,
Pray tell where is it documented that the only printer z/VM supports is a
lonely 3203?
The z/VM 5.4.0 CP Planning and Administration manual describes (Chapter 5,
on p47) SYSTEM CONFIG statements needed to support printer models:
3203 model 5; 3211 models 1 and 5; 3262; 3268 models 2
I'm pretty sure I got this to work with SPOOL 000E 4248 but I could
not come up with any details for you. I seem to have misplaced my
notes about where I put my notes
It has been quite a while since I tried it, and it was not something I
had to have, since there were two or three other
Dear Mike,
Jeff never said z/VM supports only a lonely 3203!! Nice to hear from you.

OK, so perhaps it's not *actually* lonely,
OK, we lost the good old 1403, but 'cmon... what'd I miss? In the
statement z/VM now only supports 3203 printers, when is now? ;-)
Real 1403s are no longer supported, but virtual 000E printers are defined
as 1403s by default. This is what caused Jeff's problem.

Ah...thanks John. Not I understand what Jeff meant.
Let's blame it on his UK e-mail accent. :-)
