I can only echo what others, (particularly Richard Schuh, with his very
good overview), has said.
We use VTAPE extensively and it really comes into it's own when you need a
large number of concurrent drives and the data on the virtual tapes is
small or indeterminate. Support from VSSI is

to a used IBM VTS tape based solution. Obviously this is a new vs

Hi,
We are looking for a virtual tape system as part of a project to replace
our ageing tape drives.
Does anybody have any experience with VTAPE from Virtual Software
Systems that they would like to share?

Are there any installations of VTape where Z/VSE Guests are using
virtual tape drives and virtual tapes?
If yes, is your installation running DYNAM/T as well? How are you
handling scratch tapes, etc

Its kind of fun to do the impossible.

Without having ever run VTAPE here... perhaps you could better define
your
requirements?
Are you saying that you want to eliminate all tape drives? If so, how
will you back up your DASD (upon which I believe that VTAPE writes its
virtual tapes)? Unless you

We would be using the VTAPE product as part of the solution.
Most of the backups would be going to the VTAPE library

There is concern about the communication between VTape and Dynam/T.
Do they need to communicate?
Jim,
We are currently running DYNAM 7.0 SP 4 and using VSAM based
VTAPE under VSE 3.1.2. It works just fine and will automatically
mount the virtual tapes for you. I would need to

The VTape I am referring to is a Z/VM based product and the
vendor is Virtual Software Systems. It creates virtual tape
drives and manages its own tapes and libraries.
I don't think we are talking about the same Vtape.
You're right Jim. I am also on VSE-L and obviously confused!
Sorry

VTAPE is a super product, but also consider a Flex-CUB (essentially a
channel attached PC that can present itself as tape drives or slower disk
volumes. You can attach a variety of lower-cost disk storage to the
Flex-CUB, and mirror that, or use a variety of techniques to get that to
