Really? Do you work for Apple or something? If money was no object I would
buy a new MacBook or two. That's the whole point!

I have done a lot of research into the Mac and its software. What I found

The monitor is a VGA LCD monitor by ProView. Unfortunately, I've since

Look underneath it- it should say how many mhz the processor is.
If it's a slotloading machine with firewire, it should run 10.4 tiger.
If you're going to use it for anything, look up how much memory it can take,
and max it out. The more memory it has, the more tolerable it is to work

You might be better off trying to install Debian instead of Ubuntu- the
Debian distro is still active. We had lots of trouble getting Xubuntu
working on 1Ghz G4 eMacs. We had to go with an older version, and if we
updated it it died.
The Debian install did take some messing around. It originally b

Decent DVD writers are cheap (under $30 new) these days. I know the
recent Pioneer drives will work and are good. The Samsungs are
supposed to be good, and will probably work also.

Odd but true - I've found that some older standalone DVD players (the
kind you connect to TV's, not the kind in computers) can play homemade

I think all DVD drives (no matter how old) can read homemade DVD's
written on Verbatim brand DVD-R discs. DVD+R came later, and
readability on older drives seems to vary with brand of disc. From
what I've read, if you have a new-enough drive, it's better to go with

The 9.1 CD was able to boot a G4 and it's not from a specific

There was no other system installed, so the machine should have

Considering that G3 iMacs sell for about $25-$50, it's certainly not
worth buying just a drive for $100, no matter how new and shiny it is.
I suppose a firewire DVD drive would be fine, too.
Not all DVD drives can read +R and RW, though that shouldn't matter if

Make sure you get a DVD drive new enough to read all types of DVD's,
since earlier versions came out before +R existed. It took me a long
time to figure out why my Mac couldn't read +R and RW discs.
If you're only going to play commercial DVD's, this shouldn't be an
issue, but it might come back
There were several sets of slot loading G3 iMac's. They all had a 100

two different sets. Is it possible to move a motherboard from a later

Your answer raised another question for me. Shouldn't that power button be
