As well as fabric dye, I once read that you can convert washable ink into
permanent ink by adding vinegar. Haven't tried it, but the principle was
explained as the difference in the acidity of the two.

I always thought that the reason for working some laces from the back was for
several reasons including:
Sewings joining end to start is on the wrong side and so is the sewing in of
ends.
The very short ends of threads thrown out and cut off weren't visible from the

My OH has just said he would use the "remove colour cast" tool in a photo
editing program to change the grey to white. We both use Photo Shop Elements,

I'm going by the American editions of the Antiques Road Show that have been
shown in the UK, which of course is the only way we can judge what's

I have no connection with Ilsoft, but really like their lace design program
and have upgraded as each new edition came out. I'm currently using Lace8 on
Windows 8.1 - a big jump from my almost-dead Windows XP syst

If you're used to the toolbar selection of functions it takes a while to get
used to the right-click on the page way of doing it. Although most other
programs used this method, the way RXP does it gets ingrained in
long enough to reach to the far side

I've got a stick of heelball from when I did my teacher training many, many
years ago. We had it for taking rubbings of tree bark, stone walls and other
textured surfaces. Could be useful in getting natural "patterns" as
inspiration for designing lace.

you want. Outlets like Asda (Walmart) only carry goods that will sell quickly,

I don't use my machine to replace bobbin lacemaking - it's nothing like it.
But it is useful if you just want a "quick" bit of decoration on something. I
put "quick" in inverted commas because it isn't in sewing machine terms -
probably 30 minutes up to an hour to complete a design. But if it's one

Those of us who have sewing machines which can embroider in hoops can produce
this kind of "lace". Lots of designs available on the web, some free and some
very intricate. Instead of fabric, water soluble stabilizer is used, load the
design into the machine, press 'go' and disappear to do something

Should have added that four people were killed in the storms in the UK- a
couple when there was an explosion at their house which was though to have
been cause by a gas main fracturing when a tree fell on it, one person when a

Where I am on the south coast, we had quite a bit of wind and a lot of rain.
Several trees were brought down in the area, some blocking roads, other
narrowly avoiding houses. We have a huge oak tree in the garden and there's a
lot more light coming through it now, as it lost about half its leaves -

Just had another thought - if forceps cut thread, then they'd cut the tissue
if they were being used in surgery to clamp off blood vessels. So we must be
talking about different things. The ones I use have ridges which interlock,
but the ridges aren't sharp.

mini test clip adapter availble in packs of two from electrical shops such as

One thing no-one has mentioned is that out-of-print books aren't the only
good and interesting books available. No-one has mentioned the current
excellent books which are currently in print and earning a tiny amount of
royalties for the authors, many of whom are on Arachne.

I can't see me ever getting an e-reader. For me there's nothing so
comforting as holding a book in our hand.
They also cost nothing to run, can be recycled, the covers are attractive to
look at, (as Joepie says) they provide insulation to your walls, you don't
need a printer to get hard copy,

There are instructions for making an electric bobbin winder using a
Gutterman-type sewing thread spool and an electric drinks twizzler in
"Flowers and Butterflies in 3D Bobbin Lace" by Dorothy K Cox.
It could probably be adapted to use an electric hand fan.
