I merged them, the resulting file was nearly twice that size, yet I could see
the names from only one of the files (at least that's what it looks like at
first glance). Why can't I see all the entries?

you a list of each individual tree in your database. Almost everyone
in my database is related to me. However, I have quite a list of
unlinked individuals (1 person) and unlinked families (2-10 people)

When you import files from Family Tree Maker they all come in as
Natural, a real pain to change, as Natural or biological is implied in
normal relationships, ie. not step parent etc. Hope this helps
