You need to delete the event for this individual rather than delete the data in each of the fields for the event. If an event is listed in the Individual's Event/Fact list, then you'll get a report of some sort from it. After you've got to the screen where you can edit the Events for a person

The backup file will always be smaller than the corresponding data file because it is compressed to save space. Now if you are saying a backup file made today is smaller than the *backup* file made yesterday (without having edited the data file to delete people or data) then you have a problem.
