Subject: [LegacyUG] two instances of Legacy
As a possible aid to my conversion of sources, can I open the same Legacy file
on two monitors (same computer) so I can see what I have and what I am doing?
Just looking for ways to simplify the process.

Ron,
Legacy has NEVER allowed more than two databases to be open at the same
time.
Split screen does allow six views but only two databases can be open so
those 6 views will be different sections of the two open databases.
I was not able to find any version of Legacy that advertised 9 views.
Thanks Brian. I usually only use split screen on 2 files and didn't realize it
had that limitation. So the 6 screens are for viewing 1 or 2 files in 6
windows? Still is a great feature. Too bad that ViewMaster Lists and other
commands cannot leave those windows open for both files at the
One feature that I would like in Split View would be an option to have all the
screens synchronize on the current individual of the active screen. That way
if Family tab were opened on screen1 and Pedigree tab on screen2 and Descendant
tab on screen3 with Asa Clark Brown as the current

That is a great idea. You should submit it from the home page.

I didn't realize having Legacy installed on more than one computer was a
no-no. It was always ok in TMG, just don't use at the same time. (And that
could be different since I moved to Legacy several years ago.)

Actually, Sherry has posted here within the last 24 or 48 hours to the
contrary. You can have Legacy installed on two computers with the one
license.
Have you looked at the split screen view? You can have two copies of
the same file *displayed* on the screen, or two different files open
With the split screen view you don't get two menus. Legacy will not allow
you to open two menus in the same instance of the program to compare
anything. I hate that about Legacy actually.

You don't need 2 menus with split screen. The active database will have the
title bar colored so it is obvious and the other open database window title
bars will be dimmed. Prior versions of Legacy allowed for up to 9 databases to
be open simultaneously even though it was pretty crowded on
But for what I need to do I need to have two active menus, ie, two versions
of my source list so I can see what I am doing in changing and don't
totally screw things up.
The silence on the subject of an easy way makes me think there isn't one.

The other option is to run a Source Report and save to PDF and have that
open. This report has a lot of different options. I suggest you tag a
few sources and then run with those tagged sources until you get the
information you are wanting access to.
I'm not sure whether you are just wanting the
I printed several versions of the source report, just to see what use it
might have. The idea of having an open pdf sounds good. I have the same
issue with old transcriptions and indexes and now images.
I've gotten some good ideas. Thanks everyone. I will play around this long
weekend (at least
