just wanted to let u know that I fixed the problem where it was only playing the songs I had done the setting on. several of the files were already vlc default so the change all button was dimmed bout for mp3 I had to find the continue button. the majority of the folder is mp3. it stopped

The reason you are confused is that I and others gave you more than one alternative and that has to be confusing. The way that will work for you even if you have subfolders in your folder is by terminal. If you open terminal it should start you out in your home directory. So in terminal type
