Based on my experience because this is how it worked for me, is once I
installed ML Fusion worked fine.
The only thing I did immediately observe is when launching Windows
from Fusion I had no Internet connection, but this was remedied by a
reboot of the machine.

This is indeed quite possible and easy to do.
All that'll happen, is that Fusion will ask if you want to upgrade you're VM.
Once you tell it yes, it'll update all components and go very smoothly.

install the tools, but when I click the install tools link in the menu
there's a bit of disk activity, then nothing, and it keeps telling me VM
tools have not been installed. I'm sure it's operator error, if someone can

is running and find the tools? Pleas clarify.

I remember encountering this issue last year when I first began using Fusion.
The solution is in the Tools Menu of Fusion. That is to say, you must activate
the fusion Mac Window, which means you will be using VoiceOver to navigate the
menu.

1 Gigabyte (GB) is 1024 Megabytes (MB), so to give 2 GB of RAM to your VM, for
instance, just specify 2048.
