Measure the protrusion of the piston above the block when you have the
head off. If any oil leaked into the #1 cylinder, it can cause a
hydrolock which will bend the connecting rod. Careful of whiplash when
you turn the crank by hand. The spring on the vacuum pump causes the
chain to lurch forward.
$3675. as much as i'd like to stay and fight some more, i think i'm
inclined to take it at this point as i am going to new york in 2 weeks and
that should about cover the cost of the trip.

Mitch,
Thanks and thanks. I'm really leaning toward "keeper", cheap guy that I
am, but I'd like to have some idea of the risk I run by installing this
head. I'm pretty convinced the head on the car now is fine, so worst
case may be that I spend $150 for rebuild, install and then drive the
car fo

That's what makes it such a useful rhetorical tool, the orders of
magnitude of difference point out what's wrong with the "I'm
only doing my job" argument. Not reprehensible at
Doesn't the Prius have a continuously variable tranny to transfer power from
either/or both engines/motors as necessary according to load/acceleration
requirements, etc?
BTW, wouldn't the Voltsrabbit tend to be unstable in certain situations; in

Welcome back. A word of caution though. We have been wandering (and wondering)
off topic quite a bit lately. Just a heads up.

I don't know the specs on an aluminum head, but for the cast iron
heads, cracks less than 10mm in length were acceptable. Most common
cracks were prechamber to valve and valve to valve. I had one head
that had 9-10 mm cracks in each possible position, and it had been
running ok. Since I alre

I think I am aware of most of the scams about car sales. Here is a message
from a seller that I just received:
"Hello,
The car is still for sale. It has a clean title, very well maintained, no
exterior damages and no mechanical problems. I'm asking $3.000 for it, not
negotiable. I have to to

The setup we use for ChallengeX is fairly simple... it's the controls
that are complicated! The Equinox was an all-wheel drive car, and it
was converted for the ICE to

Like all good question
Reminds me of a question I had -- do hybrids such as the Prius use the
electric drive motors at all times, and the gas engine is just basically
a genset (like in a locomotive)?
No, that would be a series hybrid. The Prius (et al.) are parallel hybrids...I
don't know how they work. A series hyb

Welcome back, Meade.
Hmm. On the one hand, combustion pressure is a whole lot more than
test pressure. OTOH, people have driven tens of thousands of miles
with cracked aluminum heads and no real troubles. I imagine the
vast majority of #14 heads still in use have those little cracks
near the val
