I think it does. The original TDI was a sweet engine---I once had one
in an '00 New Beetle. 100 hp and 150 lb-ft, more or less, from 1.9
liters. Later versions get a lot more go

I doubt that -- Benz driveshafts are unique, and very rarely get

I just bought an 84 300SD, paid less than that for it, engine runs very
well, might not be "mint" otherwise, but not bad for a 25 yr old car.
Offer him $500 and get a Kleb special engine, yer good to go.

Most good filters (Mann/Mahle) come with a new o-ring.
If the crankcase is overfilled with oil it can also cause leaks...

If it didn't leak before he opened the filter housing, the filter cap o-ring

mentioned. It isn't electric, but works off a vacuum- when it receives
no vacuum it's open (heater on), and closes under vacuum (no heat). It's
operated by electric solenoid valves under the dash behind the glovebox.

The six cylinder 603 is a 3 L. 149 hp and 195 ft/lbs torque (don't know what
the 2.5L is, but about the same as the 617 3L I think). You want the turbo
version, certainly, as the NA engine is a slug (but runs forever).
The 603 isn't all that common, alas, not used that much in the US.

is the 2.5 engine as powerful as the older 3.0 liter and is it the same
physical size or smaller? I guess I will need the correct transmission

I got a fairly inexpensive Honeywell at the hardware store. It divides
the day into 4 parts (they call them morning, away, return, and sleep).
It does not have separate programming for weekend days; some of the more
expensive models do.
The thermostat it replaced was the original that came with

I'd suggest talking to the folks who install whatever unit you have about
the best thermostat for it. I had someone install the correct brand, but
the wrong model for my heat pump. It caused all kinds of problems thought
it was a good thermostat. I ended up with the $100 version to replace the
