Beth, how does the child perform when asked to make words with the tiles
during that part of the Fundations lesson? Could it be that she is
having trouble relating the visual of the letter to the sound? When she
is reading a text, does she rely more on picture clues and making the
text makes
offered in the retell aligns with the Common Core
Standards and are great thinking questions that allow the teacher to
probe the student's thinking.

metacognition then move into the other strategies. Debbie Miller
suggests in her book teaching each strategy for about 6 weeks. For
