Activity on Lake Winnibigoshish has begun to pick up at bit. Tundra Swans have
moved in, and there are hundreds of loons, most beyond ID range (all the closer
birds today were Common Loons). This afternoon there was a Black Scoter
(Richard's Townsite Access) and two White-winged Scoters (Paint
A Loggerhead Shrike was hunting along county road 119, just north of state hwy
87 (east of Backus) yesterday around 630 PM. This is the first time I've seen
this species in Cass. Attempts to find the bird later in the evening were
unsuccessful.

A Carolina Wren was seen on Saturday (and again today) at feeders on Ten Mile
Lake.a new bird for the Walker CBC. Also seen today (outside the count
circle) was a Varied Thrush. The thrush was feeding on the side of State
Highway 84 on the east side of Island Lake (northern Ponto Lake Twp)

The Red Crossbills first found by Kim Eckert during last weekends MBW were
still present at the same location as of Saturday, June 5th. Also of interest
was a late lingering (or early returning) Harris's Sparrow on 88th st. in Byron
Twp, and 4 Black-billed Magpies along CR 19 in McKinley Twp.
Birded the county this weekend with Andrew Birch and Dale Yerger, including a
big day on Saturday and a trip out on Leech Lake on Sunday. Still almost no
songbird movement, although the weather was rough on Saturday. Only migrant
warbler of the weekend was a Blackpoll at Kabekona Narrows on Su

Spent the day yesterday birding Cass with Molly Malecek, Larry Olson, and Dale
Yerger. Many Tennessee and Blackpoll Warblers still moving through the area,
along with smaller numbers of other migrant songbirds. Of note were 5 American
Avocets at the Cass Lake Sewer Ponds (also seen earlier in

There is a Varied Thrush coming to feeders on Pleasant Lake, near Hackensack.
Also, a Red-headed Woodpecker continues to winter at feeders near Leader. Pine

ride to see a Western-type Grebe near Kabekona Narrows on Leech Lake.? It is

been noticed by the Propers on approx. 7/14.? The bird is of extra
Baird's, Stilt, and Least Sandpiper, both yellowlegs, and a female Red-necked
Phalarope in breeding plumage were seen at the Longville Water Treatment Ponds
on Sunday morning.? The Walker ponds had the same species assemblage, minus the
phalarope, on Sunday afternoon.? Also at Longville was a mi

history, having been run from 1949-1984. The 35 year (no count in 1977)

On Saturday Dale Yerger and I visited Canal Park for
Gulls, Falcons etc. We saw
1 Glaucous Gull, 2nd winter
1 Iceland Gull, adult
1 Thayer's Gull, 2nd winter
Many Herring Gulls
1 Peregrine Falcon, adult
1 Gyrfalcon, juvenile
All birds were seen right at Canal Park. The Glaucous
and both fa
Dale Yerger and I located a Snowy Owl 1.8 miles west
of CR 5 along 450th Street, south of Palisade, on
January 18th. The owl (previously posted at this
location by Shawn Conrad) was perched on a hay bale
approximatley .5 miles north of the road. A group of
10 Sharp-tailed Grouse flushed from the
Molly Malecek and I saw an adult male Harlequin Duck
off Artist's Point on Wednesday (1/4) evening. The
bird was diving with 3 male Common Goldeneyes about 50
meters off the end of the point (the walk out is
currently an ice capades type event). Also 12
Long-tailed Ducks near the point and a male
We have had a few migrant flocks buzz through Deep
Portage over the last week, including a Philadelphia
Vireo on 9/10.

The Walker settling ponds have had a few shorebirds
over the past week or so. Last night we had
Semipalmated, Least, Solitary, and Stilt Sandpipers.
The Stilt was a lone individual in a group of Lesser
Yellowlegs. Last week was mostly Solitary and
Spotted, with one Baird's and one Pectoral Sandp
Yesterday evening Dale Yerger and I went out to feed
the mosquitoes for a while. Turned up a Connecticut
Warbler in the bog along County 135 north of Boy
River, and at least 3 Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrows
in the Boy River marsh where County 8 crosses the
river. Venus and Mercury are putting on
We have been encountering good numbers of Wood Thrush
at Deep Portage this year. This morning I had at
least 5 individuals during point counts along our
North Loop trail.

If the number of limbs, branches, and tree tops that
needed to be cleared from the Deep Portage trails on
Monday morning were any indication, Sunday was a tad
"breezy".
Rain and wind gusts up to 40 mph accompanied us on our
Cass County big day effort, although the sun came out
in the evening. We
