The answer is ... PURPLE MARTIN.  Kelly Applegate banded purple martins at Meadowview Park in Elk River with red bands.  My feather book confirms that these could definitely be purple martin, so guess the mystery is solved.  Hooray!   Thanks to everyone who weighed in!  And especially to Kelly!

Lacs Counties meet, there was a flock of 14 bluebirds, a mile down the road (Mille Lacs Co) was another small flock of 8 bluebirds and then west down the road 3 miles in Benton County, there were bluebirds perched on power lines for nearly a mile - another 10 birds.   Betsy Beneke Sherburne &
