You might check your BIOS setting for your parallel port, you need
to have EPP or bidirectional enabled for this port.

Could I use this same solution to specify a particular System.map that I

looks like some kind of pppd-timeout.
I just edited the /etc/ppp/options file and removed the "lock",
after that I checked the "lock device" box on the device tab.
