How do I do a ATAPI->SCSI simulation in linux?
thanx
LM 6.0 came with a mandrake gtkzip and accidentally i installed another
gtkzip rpm. Both of these two packages are registered separately in RPM
but were installed into the same location. When i was trying to
uninstall one of them, RPM stopped with an error message saying "gtkzip

Are you using twisted pair, or coax? If the former, you probably don't have
a crossover cable. Follow the link below to see how to make one on your own,
or get one at a local computer store or mail order.

I'm trying to set up a network of 2 pcs here at home, but neither
machine can see each other. i'm pretty sure the cards are ok, because
when I use ping the TX lights go on both, but I get request timed out,

Yes but your going to learn more than you want about the internal workings
of XFree most likely. :)
You need to configure kdm to not start any servers (it has someproblems w/
auth when you do this, i think gdm does it a little better)
backup and edit /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers so it has this

Oops, sorry- I guess I assumed you'd want to boot to it. There is another
way; you can run 'kdm' from the console. It has the exact same effect, and
has to be run as root. Also, GNOME has it's own desktop manager thingy...
called 'gdm'. Just in case you're interested.

I've had this problem before under windows with a new modem. You need to
probably go into BIOS to fiddle with the address settings of Com 4. Should
be about four choices. Try each one in turn and start Linux after each to
see if you are allowed. Another problem might be a conflict with Com 2

Are you using kppp? If so, make sure it is suid and is owned by root.

Did you SET any other resolutions in your X setup???

You should be able to do this in KDE/Mandrake. You have to be root and do
Xconfigurator, then let it probe your card for all possible settings. You
then need to tab or move your cursor to each and use the space bar to check
each one you want to be able to use. (640x480 8bit, 640x480 16bit, 800
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "drivers". 3dfx has links to a
development (beta) version of an X server for Banshee and Voodoo3. Have you
tried that? If so, they note that it is buggy and beta, so you may be
having some problems related to its unfinished state.

I myself am a newbie , But it occurs to me that you would have

I think you're talking about kdm- in which case you might try 'init 5' (as
root, I believe). This should start X on tty7, and give you a login prompt
with the drop-down box of window managers/desktops. If you like it, you can
set up /etc/inittab to make this the default- change
