I recently installed Mandrake 8.1. As soon as it boots, the modem dials
my ISP. If I kill pppd, it disconnects, but within a few seconds it
dials again.
Can anyone tell me what might be running that is trying to keep the
modem constantly connected?
I get this error message when I try and run any sound application
(typically XMMS) since rebooting my system. I was able to use sound
after the install, but after reboot this error appeared. Please help.
System: Mandrake 8.1, Ximian Gnome, both updated with Red-Carpet.
Hardware: K6-350, Soundb

I am trying to install KSetiwatch 2.2.5 on my laptop (ATI Rage Mobility vid
card). I already have version 2.2.2 installed but it seems to be acting
up.won't connect after finishing a unit etc..
In any case, the install fails with a 'failed dependency' on
libGLcore.so
I just installed a second copy of Mandrake 8.1 on some extra space I had on a
second hard drive. The problem is that lilo is now completely ignored on
boot, the latest install is booted every time, lilo never shows up at all.
What do I have to modify to get lilo to show up?

I've downloaded the .bin but I am unable to get it
to install. It gives me a permissions error.
Running it as root was the same. I came across
something called chmod.
but I'm not sure what it is.

Can xmms play okay? It sounds like some program has attached your soundcard.
Make sure artsd isn't crapping-out and grabbing a hold of your card thus
making it unavailable to other sound drivers.

in fact I think 8.1 was actually 99% compliant, (or thereabouts.)

I created scripts called dial and hangup, and used them to call wvdial.
they also start and stop fetchmail, and the firewall.
I also have: killall wvdial in ip-down.local (and my firewall restart) just
to make sure..
