Is there a file in your /home/[username] directory named .xinitrc? If yes, the last line ought to specify the default window manager. Edit the file to comment out 'startkde' and insert the line exec [command-to-start-the-WM-you-want] I don't want to recommend blindly creating an .xinitrc.
