Hi Jason,
Welcome -
The bad news is that 32 MB is probably too little for what you have in
mind using Mdk 9.
I had an old Dell with 64 MB - I eventually had to add 128 MB to make a
fist of the hardware. Then it went along fine - on mdk 8.2 and now
9.0. (it chokes on Windows 98, NT and XP)
Win98 runs just fine on it.
You're the third person to suggest RAM as the problem, so I'm more inclined
to believe it now. And I can see that causing the various freezes during
installation. But the error messages? How would that account for the
securitypolicy and hard drive detection

Using the linux expert noauto command at the prompt I'm at about 66%
through file copying, which is further than I've ever gotten into the
installation. I'm sure now that I've said something about it it'll crap
out on me though.
If so, I'll give 8.x a try, thanks.
With a low ram setup all
This probably won't help, but check in the laptop's BIOS and make sure that
Plug Pray OS is turned off (if applicable). It sounds like it's having
difficulty detecting your hardware. Turning this off should help.

I downloaded 8.2 and went to install it, but half of the installation menu
came up (yes, half) before giving me a boot failed message. May be the
blanks I'm using, because the CD reads fine in my desktop systems. But
still no luck for me in

Well
bob;
when i purchased 8.0 from mandrake direct, they included an extra copy of
cd 1 and cd 2 with the comment that the boxed cds were not correctly
burned. you may want to talk to mandrake about it

DO you plan to dual boot this machine or use just for Linux? If you plan to
just run linux (which sounds best on this machine), you could try fdisk
first, try reformatting the drive. Also, make sure that your system is not
using EZ-BIOS to access the hard drive, I've heard Linux does not like

Try installing "safely" by that I mean, don't configure any network or printers
(skip the bootdisk ect) Anything to get through the installer faster. Handle X
configuration after install. (I only give this advice on a very onry system).
I'd also suggest saying NO when it asks you if you have any
You are right.
Don't do the X test.
And SCSI test if you haven't.
All goes well.

Depending on the motherboard CMOS (the motherboard BIOS) is often reached
by DEL. But on some motherboards it could be F2, F10 or many other
possibilities. Depending on the capabilities of the BIOS it may or may not
be possible to set the CD ROM to boot.

Rodrigoit is not the i486 iso image. The i486 iso image
is only available for download from Mandrake mirror sites.
Nobody has commercially burned the i486 iso image onto a CD.
The way you can tell if it's 486 is that is that all of the
rpms will have 486 as part of their file name. for
run "XF86Setup". and "Setup" by simply typing it in without quotes. Then see
if it will work. You need to be in root
