Bob,
I have the exact same problem with my bike--82 Nighthawk CB 450. It slips a
little under hard acceleration in third gear. Mine has only 17,500 miles on
it but sat for 5 years in a garage. So I studied the clutch plates
carefully, and read up on it. It seems that just sitting is not always
All,
I had the same problem on my 82 450 - I switched oils - and that solved
the problem. I was using either off brand auto parts store oil or Mobil
products and none of them met that JASO / MA spec. Once I switched to an oil
that did - the clutch came back.
Double check your oil!
Because of the uncertainty of the outcome,I haven't said anything, but for

The biggest thing with painting an exhaust is the need to cure it, and be

Here's the complete story. Noticed a clutch slip in third gear a few days

an inspection yesterday[passed] then to the PO. Came out from PO, started
bike, and engaged 1st gear. Let out clutch lever and the bike clutch
Nope. Stick with dino. Synthetic oil molecules are consistent in size, and
have a tendency to blow by piston rings if the engine was run with dino oil
for a while. I switched my car at 7000 miles, and never looked back. As

Rule out a sticking clutch piston first. If you are not going to use motorcycle
oil (look for MA on the bottle) then be sure you don't use any oil that
advertises friction inhibitors, or high mileage these have additives that will
ruin you're clutch.

Joey's probably on the right track. If you've put standard auto oil in the
bike that's why your clutch is slipping. You need one without the friction

It's a Vance Hines 4-into-1, a little beat up (used by at least two owners

That's sort of what I was meaning. Engine oils in general are heading
steadily toward more and more low-friction modifiers, and it's getting
harder to find the older additives now (ZDDP in particular, which older
flat-tappet engines need more than modern roller/rocker tappets and VVT
