Have used DVDFab, pretty inexpensive, but seems to work well.
It's really simple to find duplicate records using SQL.
Excel - not so easy

the group by option and copy and paste to Excel

2003 forest with 1 subdomain. Can you upgrade the subdomain DC's to 2008 while
leaving the root DC's at 2003? (I'm guessing yes but not recommended).
