Joe G. , Joe V. Stan, and I (Sy Schiff) found a single GULL-BILLED TERN on the
bar at the Coast Guard Station and a single SPOTTED SANDPIPER for shorebirds.
The swale was empty except for Canada Geese. On the beach, the gulls to our
right (west), consisted

Coast Gurad station, but there were still a few birds there including 4 Red
Knots and 3 or 4 Royal terns, including a yellow-billed juvenile begging food.

before sunrise to 6:30 this morning. There are numerous amounts of
shorebirds all over the sandbar and surrounding shorelines - it was
actually overwhelming.

yesterday except there were ~10 Black Bellied Plovers and some Dunlin on

view these are BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES, not Rusty Blackbirds.
Icterids can be tricky at times and it's important to consider several criteria
when making an identification: plumage, structure, vocalizations and

Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) found the NORTHERN SHRIKE to the north-west of
the Jones Beach West End parking lot. While scoping for the shrike we saw a
large flock of SNOW BUNTINGS flying along the beach. To the west a NORTHERN
HARRIER was hunting and the sky contained a half dozen TREE

Today I birded from sunrise to sunset: Jones Beach, Point Lookout, Jamaica
Bay Wildlife Refuge, St John's Pond in Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington
Harbor, Centerport, Lloyd Harbor, Caumsett St Park, Target Rock National

After some searching I found the N. Shrike at 3:30 in the Fisherman's
Parking lot just past the Coast Guard station.
After talking to people in the west end of Jones Beach I believe that

I visited the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station this afternoon - besides
Brant and double-crested comorants, saw about a dozen Red-Breasted
Mergansers inside the sandbar area (my FOS) and a few small flocks of Long
Tailed Ducks on the outside of the sandbar. (Also saw a seal by Field

A cold weather front brought out some typical November migrants in good numbers
at West End this morning. Highlights included Red-winged Blackbird (4,400),
Robin (1200), and American Goldfinch (175). Present in small numbers were Rusty
Blackbird (10), American Pipit (9), and Purple Finch (3).

Got blustery before the drizzle, but was at the Jones Beach Coast Guard
Station around 3:30pm today saw my FOS Long Tailed Duck, but couldn't get a
good pic cause he was only up for a few seconds at a time before diving.
Were about 50 Oystercatchers, around 6 Black Bellied Plover,

Since I value negative reports just as much as positive ones, I figure I
should post that I did not see the Jones Beach West End II Northern
Shrike. This despite putting in a ground search for several hours covering
the area from the WEST END II parking lot to the Nature Center

I was by the Coast Guard Station around 1pm checking for wintering ducks/
late shorebirds - not much going on with that - saw lots of Brant, (huge
flock flying in), Canada Geese, Gulls and Comorants. (I noticed that the
"spit" can be hopping one minute and be totally dead later on.)

A cold and raw morning. Yesterday 24 ROYAL TERNS were reported on the bar.
Today the same number were resting on pilings on the other side of the inlet. A
large number so late in the season.

At Jones Beach today, there was a Lark Sparrow seen briefly around 12:15
along the middle exit from the West End 2 lot, from where it flew into the
field just to the east. At about 2:00, a Red-headed Woodpecker flew into the
Field 10 lot (fishing piers), stopping briefly in a tree in front of the

The BBG (Brooklyn Botanic Garden) birding class recorded 38 species during
our trip at Jones Beach. The day started off very slowly with few birds on
the sandbar at the Coast Guard station. The tides were wrong so we
revisited this area later with better tides. I'm
