thanks all! i'll have to try that next time upgrade time rolls around. i
chickened out and got the DVD images and burnt my first DVD-- woohoo! it was
so easy! 'cdrw -i nevada.iso' i found a rewritable DVD laying around and it
worked like a champ. i didn't mind so much knowing that i'd be a
hmm, that didn't work. there are two directories under keymaps-- one is for PC
keyboards and one is for sun keyboards i believe. anyway i put it in the
type_101 folder but it didn't seem to have any effect. however there is a file
called kbd_layouts in the folder that enumerates all the layou
i was following the instructions over at blastwave and it said you could get
default PATHs set up by adding them to /etc/default/login and /etc/default/su.
i did that and it works when i su, but my normal user only has this:
PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/ucb:/etc:.
what am i doing wrong? the files have

But if you have any suggestions about how to get rid of it PLEASE post it here.
It is being told to look for it by something, now the trick is to find out
what is telling it to look, and tell it to stop.

down, sometimes slowing to a halt-- the mouse pointer becomes very sluggish or

I have to hand it to the sun guys n gals-- i just installed Solaris Express
(snv_46) onto my new Sony VAIO SZ381P and it was easier than installing the
crap from redmond- solaris has certainly come along way! so now i guess i

got my ferrari 4000 back in apirl that you had to rememember to delete libvbe
before you launched X or it would hard lock the machine, i don't
unfortunately the marvell drivers only work in 32bit mode. :( the installer
exited with an error on my 64bit install.

doh! there seems to be something wrong with gnome on this release-- whenever i
click the "start" button i get this message:
"i've detected a panel already running, and will now exit"
i was able to get a nautilus window and launch a dtterm, and then from there
launch a gnome-terminal, but jds i

tweaking the config file i added the line i usually put in my linux Xorg
configs:
(put in keyboard section)
Option "XKeyboardLayout" "dvorak"
when i restarted X lo and behold gdm was using a dvorak layout!!! i remember
just got the skge driver up and running-- worked fine after i fixed the alias

couple of weeks so i'd like to try and dive into getting some of the devices on
my vaio sz laptop working under solaris like they do under fedora 5.
i've configured tons of linux kernels by downloading the source and

how about making the tiny fix (another http header entry) that sends the
real file name (without all the gibberish) to the client?
that http header would look like:

As far as I know, Developer Edition contains NetBeans and Sun Studio
(that is, they install immediately after Solaris Express) and, as you
point out, the installation is slightly more graphical.
Express gives you the whole GNOME environment.

The installer for the "normal" installation is still the java/CDE
installer, is this correct? This is what I actually use for the moment
since it does allow me to lay out file systems..
