For near subjects I've not used a soft box.
While the lighting is nice, the power consumption
is significant. My compromise is to use a wide-
angle diffuser to scatter the light a bit more. Even
without something to reflect off of, it still
reduces the harsh shadow lines but keeps power
consumpt
