PBs 5300/190 will run fine from a Li-ion battery but as you mention will not charge inside. Runtime on a 5300 with a Li-ion battery can be simply amazing. I tested a 3400 battery in a 5300cs and IIRC got over 6 hours (with _no_HD_ spindown and _no_ backlight dimming!!) before the battery
