Remove the network module. You can get the module name from e.g. /etc/modules.conf:
rmmod
Bring up the network:
service network start
BTW, you can see the changes in /proc/net/dev very nicely with:
watch -d cat /proc/net/dev

I just upgraded a few RH 6.2 servers with wu-ftpd-2.6.1-0.6x.21.i386.rpm
when I noticed that "ftpd" is broken. Now wu-ftp is not always copying
the complete file any more. Here is how you can reproduce this problem on
your 6.2 servers. (I didn't get a chance yet to test the new wu-ftp

What I miss is a control panel kind of thing like KDE has started it.
Personally I don't care a lot but (Windows) people here at work
who are starting to use Linux are missing a central location where you can
configure Linux. And with linuxconf going away...

By this way, you don't have to hardcode the password in /etc/lilo.conf
to protect the single user mode.

In such cases I usually use gdb to get a better understanding where the
problem lies - in which function it hangs or if the program is running in
an endless loop.
It might not help a lot in your case but it's worth a try.
gdb /usr/sbin/pwconv
ctr-C
Then type in 'where' to see the function tree
use nohup

This command gives you a quick overview:
netstat -at
And the following command gives you some more information about which
processes are listening on which ports.
lsof -a -i
