I'm throwing one more question into this conversation.. I'd like to know if
1. when you use the new path tracing method, do you have the same speedups
when you turn on depth of field as you'd have with the REYES method? Cause
that's a bit of a problem with arnold atm.

Hi,
The video is back sorry about that: http://vimeo.com/67206997 ( rendering

Regarding depth of field, displacement and motion blur the impact between
REYES and Path Tracing isn't drastic or anything unacceptable..
Cheers,

I like how the tiles render so fast, Mental Ray is not like this.

They offer a free dual-core license too, which I think is pretty cool
rather than having watermarks or size limitations. (though the wonky
licensing scheme still seems unnecessary)
It's great to see all these different render engines being available for
this lowly particle system (hahaha!).

Before replying to this question, one remark: in 3Delight, increasing the AA
samples doesn't
The video look Promising Aghiles , keep up the rendering engain coming to
Softimage , waiting the trail of the version 4.
Here is a quick update regarding the hair/fur...
http://vimeo.com/67238243
Only 1 million hair on my laptop, the draw back is that Softimage is slow
to export that many hair strand... On my workstation I was able to perform
the same test with 20 millions hair strands.

Looks interesting Greg. Two questions:
1. What is your hardware setup ?
2. Could you upload it in higher resolution so we can read the menus?

Hi Guys,
That entirely depends on the use-case.
Arnold is in faster most raycasting situations, but 3Delight will be faster
for for example motion graphics or character animations with unrealistic
shading.
And even then it can very much depend on the complexity of the scene and on
of what kind that
I haven't tried 3Delight, but Arnold is **way** too good. My gut feeling is
Arnie is probably faster overall.
That said, they're entirely different rendering architectures so it's not
fair to compare. 3Delight is (as I understand it) renderman-compliant which
implies they probably use the Reyes
True, it originated as a REYES renderer, but now it may be better thought
of as a hybrid renderer taking advantage of both techniques when needed.
I like working with Arnold too, but I don't think fast renders are one of
its strongest selling points.

I thought Development on 3Dlight got bricked on account of some American
copyright/patent law pertaining to algorithms ?
As a Ray-tracer it will never beat Arnold at its own game, but maybe it has
other tricks up its sleeve...
I've always heard that despite its legacy in the industry PRman is a
Hello Ciaran,
Next release of 3Delight for Sotimage is a path-tracer. REYES is optional. (You
can select one or the other).
The path-tracer introduces some novel sampling techniques, such as nice
sampling across multiple bounces, high quality environment sampling (no need to
blur your maps)
Very cool! I stand corrected. :)

Wow. Looks amazing @_@. I used to use 3delight for production till 3.1 and
changed to Arnold, but I like to try it again.
Do you know when it is going to be released? I still can see only 3.1.17
version is available on their website.
Cheers

Thanks for the video and heads up Gregory,
it's refreshing to see that 3DL for Softimage is still actively being
developed, and from the looks of the change list relentlessly being bug-fixed
and optimized too.
You say this is a 4.0 preview, in how far does it differ from the latest
official
@Aghiles: You need to advertise your product more, I didn't even know you

Yes, we are working on that. The website/docs/communication will change so that
it becomes easier to see what's going on in the team and with the products.
I suppose you are doing

Hey Aghiles.
Of course I like to try. What should I do to try the new one?

Good comparison, I shall remember that :)
Arnold vs Mental Ray, the battle wages on.
Does 3Delight require shader dev or can a small to individual get what
needs to be done fast. Everyone doesn't use Arnold, some are able to
get there hands on it for whatever reason, excluding illegal methods.
