I think this is for bugs in Inkscape itself rather than bugs in the
website (which was my problem).
Anyway I've now got this sorted out. I'm not sure if somebody saw my
post here and fixed the problem (in which case thanks to whoever) or
if it just takes hours

I've recently upgraded to the latest version of Firefox. I was testing
it with my web comic and was horrified all sorts of things wrong.
Admittedly I didn't test 3.0 so throuily (I was testing recent changes
to my site and decided to combine with with Firefox 3.0.1 test) but I
think things ma
appears black (it should show two people infront of a
cathedral in a snow storm), possibly because it has a filter over a
bitmap image but I'm not sure of that (this is the only time I have a
bitmap image as a background).

I've noticed that comics which worked reasonably well with FF2, now
have serious problems with FF3. These same comics work well with
ASV3, Opera, Safari and Google Chrome. My suspicion is that FF3's
half baked filter support is the problem but I'm not entirly sure.
