I can't say why. But there isn't a real difference from the use of a sed
script.

Dear All,
I've tried some experiments on Herman's example. I've used abcpp as a
pmx preprocessor (or mtx post-processor if you want) instead of sed or
similar post-processing scripts. At the and of this letter you can see
the files 'grancini.mtx' and 'abcpp_pre.txt' (a preamble needed to

Yes I did so because it was the fasted way at the moment. Of course later on I
will use C for a
specified program or try sed, as David pointed

All of the changes in number of voices in the example come at system breaks,
not in the middle of a system. So yes, if there were no lyrics, PMX could do it
easily. With lyrics, I'm sure it can be done, using "in-line PMX" within the
M-Tx source. But it's tricky. I'm not very familiar with detai
Please Hermann, read the manual!
M-Tx manual says at p. A-7:
"M-Tx 0.60 is not aware of movement breaks and the possibility to change the
number of
voices."
It means that you can't do it with M-Tx, but it can easily be done with PMX.
Read section 2.3.11 of the PMX manual.

Of course, we all know that PMX can change the number of instruments at
movement breaks. It is well documented.
But, as I understand it, Hermann is asking if the changement can occur
WITHIN a stave. It's possible, but tricky as this example shows:

Hi all,
The method i applied (long ago, before i used PMX) is working with
\atnextline and using centerpause.
It is not a true change of number of staves on 1 line, but it let musixtex (in
fact \linegoal) do its work.
ie.
I start with \instrumentnumber1
then, when 2 instruments are needed
