Question from Holland.
I'm running the Squeezebox Touch with an external harddisk, samsung
story 1tb. At the moment only 75 albums in flac with art (300x300).
I've created directories and subdirectories.
My question; when I turn on my harddisk, the Touch "connects to
USB-drive". This proces takes

Quite possibly. A router or switch will automatically adjust for the
correct connection.

But my ears tell me that MP3 is inferior, so that won't work either.
Are you interested in answering my question or do you just want to win
an argument?

Talked to Squeezebox support -- they said it is probably an issue with
the network card on the Shuttle.
They seemed a little miffed about my setup that didn't involve
connecting to either a modem or a router.
But when I told them that the netbook had no problem, they said it

You can correctly tag a 64 kbps Mp3 file just as well as you can a

The ears cannot detect correct tagging, so your suggestion won't work!

There was a Seminar at the RMAF where an Audiophile was recommending
AIFF as the Format to Rip CDs to. He had spent a lot of time testing
various formats and did not like compressing formats as it gave the
computer another task to do. Simpler is better. Also AIFF was good at

Each file (track) contains a space for metadata, which includes multiple
tags. ALBUM is a tag. ARTIST is a tag. TITLE is a tag. YEAR is a tag.
DISCNUMBER is a tag (useful for multi-disc sets). And so on. Different
types of files (eg, FLAC, MP3) have different standards for tagging. Or

The ticks here are happening when using the "plug" layer which is used
when the data coming in is a different format or sample rate than what
the hardware can handle. Switching to the direct hardware layer
prevents the ticks, but then if the format of the data doesn't match

I don't think that's the cause but either way it's still a bug :)
The server is always available when the Touch powers on. I'm often home
when it powers on at 4:30pm and there's no prompt to configure. It just
powers up and sits quietly either showing the clock or the home

I have just connected up my Touch with Cat6. Its a lot thicker than the

select the files that constitute the "album", right click, select
"extended tags", then click the little "star" icon at the top to the
right of the metadata box. This will bring you to the "edit tag info"
box. In the field box,

The only thing that comes to my mind is that we had to remove all
ALBUM_ARTIST tags from our "classical" FLAC files. Otherwise we had all
the artists in the SBTouch's menu below MyMusic->Genres->Classical which
was rather annoying because we just couldn't find anything anymore.
just my 2 cents.

I don't think so. Have a look at this discussion:

Two of the defaults for grouping options were changed (I think this is
in 7.5 firmware) so that there would be less demand for exposing the
options in the interface.

Thank you. yes, I thought the Wiki looked very old. I may try to SSH. I
understand what you say that all options might not work.
Still it would be good to know if there is a new version planned (in
7.6?) with more of the config options (particularly grouping) exposed
to the UI, as described in "v
