I have filed an enhancement bug for this behavior. So anyone who would
see this enhancement in future release please vote on bug 17908:

Hello All. First post here. Just bought a Touch, and need an External
Hard Drive to connect to it via the USB port. Probably 2 TBs. Any
recommendations based on experience? Low power and low noise please
(ideally no fans, and no whirring/whistling drives - solid state?):
It'll be running from AC
Or you can use the patch I wrote for this exact problem. After the patch
is applied, switch to the manual mode. When playing, the normal
brightness setting is used. When stopped, or switched off, the minimum
brightness setting is used.
To install, first enable 3rd party plugins. Then install the

Yes you can assign a static IP address, connect your laptop up directly
to the SBT, no router no nothing, just an ehternet wire from the laptop

Select Connect to Ethernet Network. It will

I wonder why they didn't make it a bit easier to assign a static IP

would do the same if you turned off the DHCP server on your network

yep this or use SSH
I already had that patch installed but it wasnt working. Now I know
why: I had the Touch set to automatic brightness control instead of
manual (which is required for your plugin to work).
Your plugin will solve my issue when playing music in the evening but
it creates a new issue: the display

- Check the formatting of the device, Touch supported formats: FAT16,

- Touch can only see/use a single partition, format as a single

Also, might look into using a good quality and longer USB cable, then
the USB HD can be located further away from your ears.

Audiolab 8200CDQ _not_ working with kernel #3 and no hub.
Given that I have practically no hi-res material, are there any other
benefits to going the hub route?

The ideal solution would be to use autoamatic brightness control but
limit the minimun treshold to a certain level (configurable) when
playing. Could you modify your patch to do that?
Just to understand, you want the following:

Thanks for the suggestions, folks! I'll have to wait until a little
later this week to give these a try.

If you never want to go above 48 you should be able to use kernel #1
without a hub. There might be some DACs

Yes you can turn off
Toby, thanks. Thats a lot to think about. Not being familiar with USB
External HDs of any description, I assume Sleep Mode is normal for
them, to save power and prolong life? Are there any particular
makes/models whose sleep mode isnt going to cause the Touch to rescan
library every time they
Different people have different rates of success w particular drives.
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/USB_Compatibility - this is
probably woefully outdated. Manufacturers are constantly
updating/changing their products.

hub lets you go up to 96. Most DACs seem to be able to do this without
one of the special kernels.

I tried the new USB audio applet 0.4, with the default kernel, it works
great with both the HRT streamerII (async class 1.0) and the 2706
(adaptive, 16 bit class 1) based DAC. The 2706 DAC works at all sample
rates (44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96) which is a bit unusual
JohnSwenson;692799 Wrote:
I tried kernel 3 and got exactly the same results. In addition I also
tried the EMU-0404, which works in 44.1 but has bizarre sound in higher
rates. So it looks like the EMU-0404 specific code did not make it into
this kernel. I do not have any class 2.0 DACs to try
Thanks D. I realize now that a simple answer is probably not going to be
of much value. Yes, I was hoping to use the Touch as a standalone unit
(for internet radio and stored music files), but if my mucking around
with it over the past days had taught me anything, it is that the
darned thing is
I think it's possible to do it automatically, but there will certainly
be an interruption in the music, and it's possible that you'll have to
start a new stream in mysb.com.
You can find something about it if you search the forums.
I run my server 24/7 so I have never seen the need to try it

Update: after 5 days of use of my hdd, so far not a single issue. My hdd

it jumps into action and starts playing music in 2-3 seconds. So far
very pleased with the result and no need to turn on
