My unpowered HD sound thats plugged into the SBT direct improved when i
added the powered usb hub and this brought the sound level close to the
streamed wifi but in comparison the sound was still thinner and more 2d
then this morning i remembered the HD has a second usb lead to give

Sorry for derailing spamming the tread ,more ramblings on my favourite
subject.
I forget to mention simple probability , the human factor is simply more
likely to be the explanation .
That is taken into account with blind testing .
Some other explanations concerning unmeasurable differences
And I agree completely with Mnyb's comments.

I am streaming lossless files from my pc to the SBT which sends its
signal via digi out to my dac.
I also have a hd dierect into the usb which is a direct copy of the hd
on the pc and also have a cd transport into the same dac.
The volume on the SBT is set to 100% and i have never used the analo

Today i have compared Natalie Merchant cd in my cd tranport to the
streamed wifi on the SBT and the sound is very close to eachother but in
comparison the hd direct into the usb on the SBT is just not as good it
sounds lighter weight and thinner.
My Cyrus cdxtse with psxr transport runs its strea

that's an over simplistic understanding of how expectation bias works.
And there should be no difference in sound quality coming from the TOUCH
unless (1) something is broken,

If you expected HD direct to sound better, but there was no difference,
it might feel that the HD direct sounded worse - because it sounded
worse than expected.
Not saying tha
I expected HD direct to sound better so expected bias doesnt explain why

Yeah, I'm getting lazy. Didn't even ask if the comparisons had been done
double-blinded, or even single-blinded. ;-/

Maybe it is just the SBT's built-in server degrades the sound some if
thats the case i can live with the difference.
Maybe i am golden eared as i could hear the difference between shunt
resistors on my Seiden 43 stepped attenuator but i doubt im golden eared
at my age lol.
Thanks for the input g
To hear such dramatic differences you must be one of those with golden
ears and a very revealing system. If that is the case, I can't fathom
why you would want to (a) have a hard drive in you listening room,
unless it is a truly silent SSD, and (b) run the SBT's built-in server,
which people who c
All the CDs were ripped to WAV format and no messing with the files and
thenthe original hard drive was copied to 3 other drives.
The pc has the 2600k overclocked @ 5 gig and i have Virgin broadband
50mb soon to be upgraded to 100mb and its the streamed music that still
sounds better than hd dir
LMS ( on a computer ) also saves some bandwith by transcoding WAV files
to FLAC ( also lossles ) unless you messed with the file types setting ,
thus saving roughly 40% bandwith .
This is a nice feature I do usually tire everyone with recommendations
to use FLAC due to better tagging support etc
If your wifi network is not robust enough you'll get drop outs not a
deteriorating sound quality. This is sometimes a problem with higher rez
files, i.e 24/96 or 24/192. If you get no drop outs, there is no
difference between wired and wifi sound quality.
I ripped all my CDs usin WAV lossles and the hard drives on my SBT and
Sony blu-ray are both back up copies of my original hard drive so the
music files are exactly the same on all the drives.
My pc i built for gaming Intel Core i7-2600K , Asus P8P67 PRO Intel
P67,Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB)

Good idea with a powered hub, the Touch may have under performed if the
HD used a lot of power from Touch's internal 5v .
I don't know the exact design here and what it can tolerate however many
external drives takes more amps than they should if they followed the
USB specs :-/
I moderate my clai
Thanks for the replies guys
I do run the SBT through my Cyrus dacX but the reason i asked about hd
direct is i have been using both methods but found streaming from pc via
router sounded better than hd direct but my 1 tb hd is usb powered and
yesterday i had a thought and dug out my old usb hub t
