All the articles seem to reference the same Australian Financial Review story
from July of this year.

I'm not saying that it couldn't be done technically. It would be an awful way
of implementing it though. It would be better to do it as they appear to have
done it. VIA a GSM module using SMS or TCP/IP over wifi/ethernet. The TCIP/IP
thing wouldn't be instant. You would have to connect to the
Yes- AMD has implemented similar questionable technology. I haven't read up
on either terribly though.
OK,
So basically what this is saying is that a GSM module is a critical
component. If you remove that GSM module (they look like this:

I've yet to see the name AMD in all of this hooha about backdoors in

Has anyone come across their name in any articles?
It's a good question. If I had to take a shot at what is meant it would be
that it has a tcp/ip stack in the BIOS. In fact I'm pretty confident of this
as there are BIOS options to update the BIOS on at least some systems. So
what is probably happening is that when the technology is activated

The first three programs on that list have graphical interfaces. (Which I
assume that it's what you mean by "user interfaces".)
I can find this list, which includes several free programs:

Hm, I would choose a different strategy. Put your home dir on a dedicated
partition. Then backup the system partition(s) like / with a full backup. For
your changeable stuff you could do filebased incremental backup like with

When upgrading to a new release, I've always done as suggested in #6. Allow

formatting), and mount the old swap. When your new system comes up, you'll

Your mounted home dir ? Do you copy your full home partition as dd image and

I do not exactly know a GUI tool but in the end this could boil down to
