Do you know what NVIDIA GPU your system has? If so it might be possible to give a pointer on what kernel might be needed, or if it's a very recent one then even new nouveau kernel modules may not support it well.

I'm afraid I don't have much to add. I haven't ever actually done the upgrade from 7->8. The only thing further I might suggest is to say 'Yes' to the flidas entries, then run `apt-get update` followed by `apt-get dist-upgrade` and see if that gives some more output. You would then need

Another thumbs up for Audacious. I switched to it from Rhythmbox when I update to Etiona (rhythmbox is not built successfully there yet). Audacious is lighter weight, reliable, no complaints. The only thing I could see is that the interface with tabbed playlists may be a bit cumbersome
