Actually, I think something funny is still going on here. I found that when I import photos from my camera (just copying via nautilus+gphoto; jaunty with latest updates), the thumbnails are incorrectly rotated. But if I clear .thumbnails/normal, the thumbnails subsequently generated are correct.
