As the release notes suggested, I tried booting the Live-CD with 'nomodeset' option under the F6 menu. Interestingly, the vertical lines were still there but everything (icons, pointer etc.) was doubled about 1/2-inch to the right. I mean 2 Install Ubuntu icons, 2 Examples icons, 2 pointers.

As was the case for Hardy, the vesa driver does a much better job of detecting the display size. I generated an xorg.conf with sudo xorg -configure, changed the driver in section Device from radeon to vesa (and commented out VendorName, BoardName and BusID), and rebooted with nomodeset.
