Andy,
Doug from AI Squared posted the note with the current subject line and there
are a lot of new people on the list who did not have the history of
ZoomReader, so the questions about its usability for a totally blind person
naturally came back up.
And, a few people were wondering if they had

Apparently not, they still say a totally blind person cannot use it, which
isn't a good thing in my humble opinion.

Rose, why is this not a good thing? The company AI Squared last time I
checked is a company who develops software for partially sighted people,
not totally blind people. So, can you connect the dots for me? I might
have missed something.

The customer service at my bank is
never mind, I just think that they should have included features that would
be helpful to all of us but apparently I am the only one who feels that way,
do forget I said it.
The note I saw made it sound as though we could all use the app or at least
it did to me.

Rose,
You are not alone.
AI Squared confused things from the beginning as to who the app would work
for, but later they tried to make it clear that it was really designed for
low-vision people with the promises that if they sell enough they would
consider making it accessible to totally blind
Well, I agree with you, Rose. The sender meant it that way. When the app
first came out there was a big rou on the list concerning it's functionality
for totally blind users.

Hi,
The subject line doesn't mention the iPad 2. I suspect that is because the
camera specs don't meet the minimum qualifications for the app. Be glad it
saves you $19.99.
Don't waste your money on it.

This is true, but this was a while back. It's been obvious for well over a
year that the app was designed for persons who have some vision. There's
nothing new here, so I do not understand all the fuss at this time.

Doug,
How would a totally blind user go about making sure the alignment of the
document is correct? Will Zoom Reader use some sort of logic to correct
for poor alignment? Thanks, sounds very interesting.

My wife has high partial vision, and has Zoomreader. She said that there is
a red line on the screen that you use to align the text. I must say that
even though she can see what she is doing, she has never been able to get
acceptable results.

For those of you not quite sure what ZoomReader is, it's our OCR app for iOS
devices. You simply snap a picture of anything with text on it and in mere
seconds, ZoomReader turns that paper into electronic text and reads it aloud.
Think of the possibilities - grocery store signs, menus, handouts

Fred, we haven't done anything more to specifically address the needs of blind
users. If this version on more platforms brings in enough money to fund it, we
have plans on the drawing board to do so.

Hello:
I have a similar concern to Fred. When you read the description of the app, it
suggests that would be functional for totally blind users given that it is
possible to get speech output of what is scanned. We need to be clear in the

Yes, from the sounds of the first email, I inferred it was fully accessible to
a blind person. I note, too, there are in-app voice upgrades of $2.99 each.

I do not have any real-world exsperience myself, but others have said that
one needs to have some vision in order to get it to work properly.

I just did a test on the iPod Touch 5th Generation.
I scanned the same page from the same height with Zoom Reader and with Prizmo.
Zoom Reader gave me about 30 percent accuracy, Prizmo was about 95 percent
accurate.
For half the price, Prizmo is way better.
Frankly, from the comment of a couple
