It seems to be a Mountain Lion thing
Since upgrading, the same thing for me, which is a pity, as it was a useful
ability to have.
Seems that they find something that is useful, and people have gotten used to,
and remove it.
If there were problems with it, I could understand, but...

Well, it worked .. phew
I deleted the calendars on the desktop and then sync'ed the iPad and I got all
my correct data back.
I have arranged with Daniel for a visit to sort out my iCloud issues.

Over the last two weeks, I've had a USB cord and a power cord stop working for
no reason at all and when replaced, they both work fine.

Have acquired geriatric external 4x CD burner from long suffering but
equally geriatric Brother.

from a System disk or Disk Warrior and see if you can
trash it then.
