Hi Barb,
Glad to hear you finally cracked it and unlocked your keychain.
From your original post I see you are using OSX 10.3.9, so I expect the
differences you now see are due to how Keychain Access has developed from
10.3 to 10.6.
Personally, I had a big upgrade from 10.2 straight to 10.5,
Hi Neil
Something won at least. eh?
No don't think so - this older imac (grey/transparent slot loader
all-in-one) is running 10.3.9 same as the ethernet-less emac.
The version of Keychain installed on here is Keychain Access 3.1.4,
installed 13/04/05 - 5.51am - some teacher was up at it
Hooray! Finally found a downloadable version of Firefox 2.0.0.20 for
the OS10.3.9 running on this older imac - using it now.
Got sick of Safari when it wouldn't connect to my bank this afternoon,
went Googling again.
(This time I've KEPT the installer - just in case!)

Hi Barb,
Sorry, when I referred to the differences between 10.3 10.6, I meant the
different menu configurations you are describing (on OSX 10.3.9) from what I
see (on OSX 10.6.2).
The FileVaultMaster stuff is, as you say, probably down to the school IT
team changing locking down certain items
Hi Neil
Oh dear - asleep on the mac again!! 8-D
Ah, I misinterpreted ... thanks!
I quite like inspecting/tweaking - taught myself all about using
computers on the mac Classic (1998) then the strawberry imac (1999)
through OS 7, 8, 9 by opening shutting everything that would open
shut.
Hi Neil .. Thanks!
Have taken note of those suggestions will look at implementing later
(been a hectic couple of days moving emac/imac etc trying to catch up
with some essential (voluntary) work/reports/minutes/etc!),
As far as I can see there's only one account listed - shows account
Hi Barb
I won't put too much faith in the 7 dots. Most of those fields will revert
to 7 dots regardless of how long the password is. This makes it harder for
anyone trying to guess what someones password is.
You can imagine if someone had Cat as their password, then 3 dots
showing,..someone
Hi Peter
Have checked this out and under
~/Library/Keychain (not plural Keychains)
There's only 2 items:
*X509 Certificates
*X509 Anchors
Both of which can't be opened - trying gets The item is either locked
or damaged or in a folder you don't have permission to change. (Error -
5000)
So NO
Thanks for that Daniel.
Might try a few more guesses then before I give up!
And on another note, got a phone call from Macs4U this morning to say
the ethernet port is not repairable, so will have to go fetch the emac
back - hopefully tomorrow, need info on it ...
(would have today but atm
Hi Barb
You've definitely got something weird going on there.
You were definitely looking in:-
Macintosh HD/Users/name/Library/Keychains/
The X509 Anchors should be in another system level keychain folder, so for
it to be in your user directory Keychain folder is quite strange.
(I checked it on
Hi Ronni
From perusing the stuff in the ~/Library/Keychain items other stuff
it looks like they did indeed turn on File Vault Master.
That's School IT Admin for you!!!

Thanks Daniel!
I think it looks like they've changed things to get it all locked down

Yep, looks like I'll have to take the archive install route -
although I don't really need to archive - only stuff on here since Tues
I've kept everything I've done
Hi again Barb
Yeh worth a few more tries,...but otherwise would be either resetting the
Keychain, or worse still an Archive and Install if lots of others things
Aren't quite right,..or a full erase and install.

Hi there Daniel!! *-D
Not sure about the emac pack, can't remember if I got one or not
(maybe not as I got it from PLC) - have to sort through the stacked
CDs/DVDs.
Wouldn't mind going to OS 10.4.10/11 - whatever you can still use
Classic with.
Lot of stuff now ignoring 10.3, but
Yes the eMac will run 10.4.11 which is the last OS that will allow you to
run Classic mode. Even if it's a PPC machine and you load 10.5 that kills
Classic regardless. So 10.4.11 would be it for the eMac and Classic.
You can't buy 10.4.x anymore as a new product, as now with Leopard/Snow
Leopard
Thanks Daniel!
Will let you know .. I have been offered another emac from a very kind
WAMUG member .. don't know whether with system, if so which system - so
will let you know how that pans out!
Might or might not be looking for OS10.4.
Oh dear .. my brain's overloaded haven't even had
AHA!!
I think I may have cracked it!
Had a few more guesses at the password - using educationally
significant words .. student seems to have been acceptable (7
letters indeed Daniel!) .. doesn't seem a particularly secure choice!!
Anyway the dialogue window went away hasn't reappeared
Hi Barb,
If you haven't got anything on this iMac yet that you need to keep, why don't
you do and Erase Clean Install of Panther.
You need to locate the Mac OS X CD.
Insert the OS X CD, restart the iMac while holding down the C key, which starts
up the Mac from the CD and launches the Mac OS
I've resent this to WAMUG as I did not include the Volume Format required Mac
OS Extended (Journaled) in Step.5.

Hi Barb
Also, when it comes up with the password screen have you tried either a)
just leaving it blank and clicking OK or b) entering password as the
password (Without ) or c) putting in the same password as the username. Eg
if the username is Admin then use admin or Admin as the password.
Thanks so much Ronni for those detailed instructions - have saved
will do that later.

Probably get them to upgrade the RAM to 1 gig at the same time - only

Yep tried that, but it annoyingly keeps coming back - at least it seems
to be letting me use
Hi Barb
Lots of good suggestions already - just a couple more points/items to check:
First-off, the instructions below are as on my Snow Leopard - since you are
running an older system, things may not be exactly the same - but the same
principles apply.
In the Keychain Access application,

I have Firefox 2.0.0.20 on the emac as well (also running OS10.3.9),
but no installer either;
but I was told just copying won't suffice that you need the installer
to have it install properly.
Thanks for the thought though! 8-)
