I wouldn't really call it puristic if someone argues for using things for what they've been intended to be used. Date and Pascal's struggle BTW is rather different: while there is massive availability of high quality products and programmers for working with HTTP Date and Pascal argue for comparatively difficult extensions to all exsisting RDBMS products and legions of smarter database designers.
