This gets into colloid chemistry, which is a very interesting subject,
but can get technical, depending on your background. Basically, the
yellow color comes from certain wavelengths of light being absorbed by
the silver ions, so the opposite color appears. It has to do with the
size of the particles- or rather the mix of ions and particles, and the
effect is not dependant on the element, but on the size.
that is my understanding at any rate. The yellow color denotes a
slightly larger size predominating in the jar, but it is still very
very tiny, and also effective. I would hesitate to use a strongly
golden colored solution, but a with a faint yellow I would not
hesitate.
