The silver maple is going for $19.36 today, then you pay the refiners
premium, fabricators charge, shipping, handling, insurance and the sellers
commissions.
You can't buy silver at spot price and it has to be sold at a projected
replacement value if it is to be re-stocked in the future.
By the spool, Abe takes a modest 15% markup and could lose his shirt, big
time, if the price takes a jump just before restocking time.
$36 an ounce for a stock of wire being sold slow by the inch is a big
gamble. The longer you keep it, the bigger the gamble if you plan to re-stock.
If the recent past is any indicator, [and current market pressures are
stronger than ever with a gold to silver ratio well over the traditional
12-15%, now at ~64% ] it should be $200 an ounce.
With a high turnover rate selling coins, there isn't quite so much risk.

Oh, and due to the shape amplifying edge discharge with centers and back
doing virtually nothing, they don't make the best electrodes. [they'll "work"]

I use silver bouillon coins .999 you can usually get them a couple
dollars over going rate. Of course you have to be set up with alligator
clips. Anyway, just wanted to point that out. Maybe there is more
involved with making silver wire than minting coins, but that seems awful
high. I guess too they don't want to hassle with adjusting prices with
silver market.
