I've used it to simulate hi-wind fields to apply as force to our custom ICE hair simulation tools for Argonaut, the robot dog in Spy Kids 4. Each hair strand position would find the closest particle from that curl-noise point cloud, check it's velocity and apply it as a force on the strand. The effect worked great. I've also used it to do many more tests but from what I can recall, Spy Kids 4 was the only movie that its use made it to the final shots.

Hello Andy,

I'm a bit late, but nice to hear that your problem is fixed now :). The Linux and Windows build were using exactly the same compound if I remember correctly, so I have no idea why it was broken on your side. Btw, I'm happy to hear that this little compound as been used in production. I only knew it has been extensively used at StereoD on Titanic3D and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter for bubbles and atmospheric dust effects.
It is not always easy to tweak but I remember that the offset parameter was extremely important and needed to be changed based on the BBox size of your point cloud. Also, this algorithm was first designed for incompressible fluid effect. There is a mode to use it as a force (to use it in a classic Euler integration), but of course the curl motion won't always be there in this case. But playing with the various parameters can gives some nice results sometime :).
I'm curious to know if other people used it in production!

Cheers,

Guillaume

 Sure thing. It's attached.

Yep, for some reason the version of the compound included with our current
install of XSI is broken, but Michal's version works fine.

It's awesome to finally have this set up working, I can see me using it all the
time. Thanks for everyone's help.

Cheers,
A
