The two pools I've seen connected to a fire ump have both had (for lack of a
better word) two floor sinks about 6'x6' of open grate, each with a 6"
suction line, the idea was that you could not create enough suction to hold
a swimmer down. The owner said he tried it, and he was able to get away
easily. I personally did not volunteer. The second point is if the building
is on fire, what are you doing in the pool. Oh yeah I forgot we're talking
about people using their heads! Forget that question.

Well, I'm not real proud of it, but we've used pools as suction twice.
Only other option was donating a tank to a for-profit hotel.
Cautions include installing oversize suction lines, like two 8" for a 500
GPM pump, with inlets at least 6' apart. Tell your pump guy yso he can
nickel plate the impeller and something with lantern rings (Tom FGOL knows
more about pumps than I ever will). On the last one we tried to rig up
something that would function as an intermediate chamber and put a vortex
plate on it, but it got WAY too cumbersome. Instead, the aforementioned
twin
8" feeds and lots of water in the pool worked- the insurance co's field
engineer witnessed the test, and was fine with no sign of vortex, accepted
albeit not something you want to do. And this was before (or why) I was on
#22 :)

Certainly nothing I'd suggest being done, and it's after 5 on Fri so I'm
not
touching the effects on pipe. Time for top-down drive home and stress
management intake. A great weekend to all.

We've only used pools as static water supplies.
Regarding the issue on drawing suction while someone is in the pool -
would
it be possible to devise a preaction evacuation type alarm (something
similar to a carbon dioxide fire system) to sound prior to the pump firing
up? I see a potential issue with the delay in activating the fire pump
though.
Had one a few years ago where the building owner pondered using their wine
storage tanks in lieu of water.
