For Residential Sidewall I believe that the "Back""Wall Wetting" to reduce "Flash-over" is still a very important factor. Additionally I've been told that yes there is a certain percentage of water that does direct back from the standard HSW heads to the wall or soffit. For many years it was very difficult to get "Recessed" or "Concealed" HSW sprinklers to meet UL or FM because of the delay in activation, and how it affected the spray patterns.
