Todd,

I am guessing that the other model building codes are pretty similar to the
IBC with respect that depending on the type of construction, the intended
classification/use group (as you pointed out), and the size of the project
(area and height) all play into whether 13R is a viable option.

In recalling the thread that I mentioned in earlier post, I believe the
subject line was 13 vs. 13R for that previous thread. If I remember
correctly someone had asked about a parking garage, but then some else
brought up a retail space and everything went to hell in a hand basket. One
of my favorites. Sure it's not "PE vs. Layout/Design but not Engineer
Technician Designer Person" quality, but up there with the greats. I may
take a nostalgic look back for kicks this evening, but for now I just want
get out of the office before George gets back and thinks of something for me
to do.

In that post, I think someone mentioned that in order to have the horizontal
separation needed, a 3 or 4 hour barrier would be needed. Yikes!!!! I am
thinking that if someone were to go to that length and spend that amount of
money that a full 13 systems would be small taters. And that person should
also be able to collect bling from the general public.

I agree that it is a little unusual, but also keep in mind that the IBC (and
I am sure other model codes) limit the footprint (depending on the
construction type)of the structure so that this doesn't get out of hand. We
(or maybe I) are speaking in terms of a residential building with parking
below for the tenants to use (and maybe Aunt Ethel and Uncle Charley when
they comes to visit). What is wrong with maintaining a life safety level of
protection in this instance? Nuttin says I....

I don't know why if you take the same parking garage and put it beside the
Residential building and put a separation between them that a full 13 system
would be called for. Dat don't make sense to me unless to compensate for not
needing as high a fire rating to form the separation (1 or 2 hour instead of
3 or 4 hour). Then it would make sense. Right?

But I think that by the time you get to that point, your square footage
might possibly put you over the limit of what the model codes says you can
have for a particular construction type and still use 13R. If you get to
that point then little section in 13R makes no nevermind.

I don't want to even ponder mixed use at this point. Cuz I am too tired.

"13 Light" - I like that. Here's to you Mr Stonington Connecticut PE
sprinkler guy!!!

Have a good evening....

I'm outta here.
