Douglas, NFPA 17A says you must install a listed UL 300 compliant system but NFPA does not determine what qualifies as such, UL does. If a system is a listed UL 330 compliant system you know it has passed the testing protocols UL has established as a requirement to obtaining the listing. My understanding is that a UL 300 listed system can have a vertical duct run of unlimited length but is limited to 100' for a horizontal run. I have a run that surpasses 100' and so need an alternative. A grease scrubber is an alternative. A sprinklered duct is another alternative. The problem I have is that I can find how to layout the sprinklers in NFPA 13 but I can't find anything that tells me how to calc those sprinklers which are obviously in their very own design area. IFC has related commentary about duct sprinklers for hazardous fume ducts in semi-conductor plants but I don't see how this applies.
