That particular section is dealing with racks with internal barriers. The idea is that the in-racks will operate first and provide control if the fire originates within the racks. Ceiling sprinks operate for the top rack level or the open floor area including aisles. But even then the rack sprinkler will spill out into those spaces.
NFPA 30 has some real specific requirements for real specific items. Hopefully someone has done their homework on this. Determining protection schemes for flammable and combustibles is one of the easiest to screw up if you are not familiar with the commodity and storage arrangements. People have a tendency to skim through the info, make assumptions and not read the details. Craig L. '08 - 16.6.1.6 and .7 clearly says to me anyway we don't have to calc the in-racks and overhead simultaneously. Seems a significant departure from normal. So I am reading this right? My only thought is there are so many heads in the rack with a barrier we wouldn't expect the ceiling heads to operate? I do see the option when you leave out the barrier we are back to normal balancing. Chris Cahill, P.E.
