I believe 8.6.4.1.1.3 is referring to a ceiling elevation change where heads must be installed below the lower elevation due to the area and distance from the adjacent wall. To put it another way, the elevation change is out in the middle of a larger room where D from figure 8.6.5.1.2(b) is > than 30" therefore the head must be in the lower elevated lid. A ceiling is not an obstruction in my opinion. A soffit on the other hand is. A soffit is more closely defined by an obstruction as shown in 8.6.5.1.2(b). I believe 8.6.4.1.1.3 is to be followed when it is already established that a head is required under that lower lid as indicated when it states "...the sprinklers shall be permitted to be spaced as though the ceiling was flat, therefore, follow 8.6.4.1.1.3 in that scenario.

According to the new rule I believe that we cannot use the obstruction rules. Greg McGahan Operations Manager Living Water Fire Protection 1160 McKenzie Road P.O. Of course the "soffit" is about 1'-9" wide. My thoughts are that a head is required due to the difference in elevation being greater than 3'-0". Any other thoughts?
