Isn't this lower soffit going to have the high end bottles of liquor
displayed on glass shelves below? If so, the head in the soffit will be
obstructed by the top shelf. Then couldn't you treat it as piece of
furniture built into a wall and have the upper sprinklers spaced to the back
of the wall under the soffit without a sprinkler in the lower soffit,
assuming that the shelving continues the full length of the soffit?

BUT

(A) Where a vertical change in ceiling elevation within the area of
coverage of the sprinkler creates a distance of more than 36 in. (914 mm)
between the upper ceiling and the sprinkler deflector, a vertical plane
extending down from the ceiling at the change in elevation shall be
considered a wall for the purpose of sprinkler spacing as shown in Figure
8.6.4.1.1.3(A).

According to the new rule I believe that we cannot use the obstruction
rules.

Take a look at Figure 8.6.5.1(b) page 13-57 NFPA 13(07)

If head can be 4'6 away from obstruction your ok.

I have seen dozens if not hundreds of similar situation without sprinklers
and just wanted to get the professional spin on it:

The area behind a bar where the liquor is kept has a ceiling height of 9-6
and the remainder if the Bar is at 13'-0". Of course the "soffit" is about
1'-9" wide.

My thoughts are that a head is required due to the difference in elevation
being greater than 3'-0".

Any other thoughts?
